Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- A crack running along the operator mount weld. This is the big one. BFT operators are heavy, and every open/close cycle puts torque on that bracket. A hairline crack means the metal has already fatigued; it’ll grow and then it’ll let go, usually at the worst moment.
- The gate sags toward the latch side by half an inch or more. The hinge post has moved, or the weld at the hinge has stretched. In Granada Hills, the clay soil expands and contracts with our wet winters and dry summers, which slowly works hinge posts loose even when the welds were decent.

DIY or Call Us?
If you just want to identify the problem, look closely at the weld seams around your gate hinges and operator mount. A cracked weld is visible, and a leaning hinge is measurable. But here’s our honest recommendation: do not weld a gate hinge or operator mount yourself. Re-welding a fatigued joint without grinding out the old bead leaves the same weak metal underneath, and a gate that weighs 400 to 800 pounds can fail fast and hurt someone. When we see welds fail in 3 to 5 years here, it’s almost always because the original weld was made over paint or rust, or the hinge post was set in a slab the gate was never meant to swing from.
