Second, with the opener disengaged, push the gate by hand. It should move with steady, even resistance. If it binds, grabs, or feels like it’s fighting itself, that’s the steel talking.

What you should not DIY: anything involving cutting, grinding, or welding on a gate that’s under tension, and anything that involves an energized opener. A sprung gate leaf weighs hundreds of pounds.
